Happy Holidays! A Christmas cookie tradition…

Tradition! Tra-dit-ion. Tra-dit-ion!

If any of you are musical theater geeks like myself, you might be singing along with me to the opening number of the classic Fiddler on the Roof. Otherwise, you might be thinking this girl has gone off her Christmas rocker. Whenever I think of tradition, I can’t help but flash back to a younger version of myself dressed as a Russian village person circa 1900 and singing ‘tra-dit-ion!’

Flash forward to the holiday season 2010. My family has a long-lived tradition of making cookies around Christmas time. My grandmother started the tra-dit-ion back in the day by making the following mouth-watering festive cookies:

  1. Classic cut-outs (need I say more)
  2. Peanut butter blossoms (peanut butter sugar cookies with a hershey’s kiss in the middle)

3. Pineapple turnovers (cream cheese dough makes for a pastry like cookie filled with pineapple preserves topped with frosting glaze)

4. Mexican wedding cakes (crushed pecan cookie with confectioner’s sugar)

5. Hello dolly’s (cookie bar with graham cracker crumb bottom with chocolate and peanut butter chips…unfortunately I don’t have a picture of these. I brought them to a work Christmas party and they were a big hit!)

6. Pecan caramel tart (this one typically gets the boot every year but my Grandma was a trooper. She would make all 6 kinds every year)

I love family holiday traditions. Every year we make sure we make the Christmas cut-out cookies as a family. It’s fun to sit around and decorate the shapes of Christmas trees, stars, reindeer, candy canes, etc. by using red and green sugar crystals and jimmies.

Here are some snap shots of out cut-out experience this year:

I hope you all have a healthy and happy holiday season filled with family traditions.

Peace, love, and food,

What traditions are special to you around the holidays?
